Back in the Baroque Era the form of the first movement was Ritronello Form which simply alternated between the orchestra the ritronello and soloist -- as if they were in a competition. The concerto is meant for a concert hall. The sonata is a chamber piece intended for a smaller group that could fit intimately in a chamber or room -- an orchestra obviously could not, which is why it is meant for a concert hall which usually features one instrument per part, versus an orchestra which has several instruments playing the same part.
