His religious beliefs are further jolted when he sees a young girl haplessly dying in a road accident for whom he reluctantly performs the ritual to absolve her sins.

His mentor still believes in him and urges him to go to Italy to take an exorcism course hoping that he it would strengthen his faith in Christianity. As a result he sends him to an eminent Jesuit exorcist, Father Lucas Trevant Sir Anthony Hopkins , whose ways though questionable are quite effective. Father Lucas explains to him that it takes multiple sessions over a long stretch of time to completely free a victim from the demon. Despite witnessing some supernatural occurrences during the aforesaid exorcism, Michael is as skeptical as ever. After the second exorcism, the girls condition becomes quite critical as she is moved to a hospital. She soon dies and the demon finds a new victim. As the moment of reckoning draws near, Michael may be the only hope left but first he must overcome his own doubts and apprehensions in order to fight and destroy the ominous forces.

User Reviews Parents say Kids say. Adult Written by prettylittlestu His scepticism and history of working with corpses somehow make him a perfect candidate to go to the new exorcism school that has started at the Vatican. So far, so good, made even more intriguing by the fact that unorthodox facilities such as this now exist in real life. Kovak, however, is unwavering in his belief that what the church calls demonic possession is, in fact, a serious psychiatric condition that should be treated by doctors, not exorcists.

His tutor sends him to join the exorcist legend Father Lucas Hopkins and, in a very real sense, all hell breaks loose. It is not as if the film's change from reasonably thought-provoking drama to supernatural scare-fest is unexpected or even unwelcome, but its desire to convey the best of both worlds proves an awkward fit.

Director Mikael Hafstrom had a successful crack at the latter a few years ago with the schlocky horror , so the fact he keeps the cinematic equivalent of a straight face for so long is to be commended. There is also some gentle, likeable humour, not to mention the handsome shots of Rome. The quality of the acting, however, deteriorates as the film enters its final act: O'Donoghue is way out of his depth and Hopkins resorts to his familiar tricks. He has been worse but is still, essentially, lowering his standards for a fat pay cheque.

It's a shame things finally go off the rails as the story intensifies because, for all its flaws, The Rite is quite watchable. It may not convince you of the existence of the devil but, with its true-story twist on a popular cinematic theme, it adequately entertains.
