The second child and only son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell, it had long been assumed that Aegon had been brutally murdered by Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, during the Sack of King's Landing towards the end of Robert's Rebellion , alongside his sister, Rhaenys. A Dance with Dragons , however, revealed that wasn't the case, with Tyrion travelling with someone called Young Griff, later confirmed to be Aegon Targaryen or at least, that's how he's presented to the reader , who had been saved from King's Landing, and raised to be the perfect ruler of Westeros, with his eyes firmly set on the Iron Throne.

And yet despite that, it is completely absent from Game of Thrones. Tyrion's long journey is massively expedited, most of the characters from this storyline are absent, and there's not even an outside chance or rumor of Aegon's survival.

The most obvious reasoning behind Game of Thrones cutting Aegon Targaryen is that it came too late in the day. If the show were to include him, then it would've had to introduce him during season 5, which marked the point where they started to veer away from the books in more pronounced ways than ever before.

Showrunners David Benioff and D. Valid, though I think in the Faegon theory the assumption is the Golden Company leadership are in on it, not the rank and file. Also what would this mean for the contract writ in blood? And why never petition any of the other kings who could have used their help? And most importantly, what of the "Only extinct in the male line" comment from Illyrio?

Thats very strange info for Martin to include if the Golden Company are just interested in going home right? Both of these recent posts make some of the more compelling points for Aegon being real, but I think you're also correct that Illyrio's comment and the involvement of the Golden Company are some of the best evidence of a Blackfyre.

Either way, I'm interested in the Aegon plot. With Aegon dead, chaos ensued, all hope to restore the Targaryens to power was dashed, and the prophecy of the Prince That Was Promised was left unfulfilled. Regardless of the upheaval it created, there was no doubt that Aegon and his family were actually dead. Tyrion Lannister encountered Griff aboard the Shy Maid, which was headed to Volantis to meet Daenerys and provide her with more troops and ships.

Tyrion quickly deduced that Young Griff was actually Aegon, hiding in plain sight. This sounds somewhat familiar, right?
